Culture shock can be described feeling lost in a completely new environment that is not something that a person is fully comfortable with. This whole new environment in most cases consists of being in a completely different country where their way of doing things or even their language is different. Some of the different side effects of this culture shock can consist of feeling left out because because you might not know anyone or being constantly misunderstood since the country that this new person is in does not speak your native language. These different effects can cause someone who is experiencing this to probably find someone else that is also from the same or similar country so they don’t feel like they are fully alone. Something that an ELD teacher can do to help support these students is constantly trying to make them feel welcome or involved. This means that they should be checking for understanding from these students so that they are not falling behind. These teachers should also be culturally responsive in order to make the content more relatable to them.

I feel as though that culture shock can affect a students ability to learn because they are in a completely new environment that is not something that they are use to being in. Not understanding the language can affect their ability because it is probably one of the most important parts of understanding the learning material. Also, not being in the same learning environment that they are use to can pose as a problem because they will probably have trouble with different procedures within the classroom setting. Not knowing anyone in class can also affect these students abilities because it can prevent them from reaching out to their classmates for help. I would try to help classroom teachers understand culture shock by describing to them how it feels to be in a completely different environment where they cannot fully communicate to others what their needs are. I would also try to describe it as something that can go away over time if they are given the proper tools to efficiently adapt to that new environment.
