The principles of neuroscience and brain rules can help to guide my teaching and lesson design by showing me different response that specific students might give in response to different aspects of the classroom. This can also allow me to see if certain students start to get nervous as a result of the release of cortisol because it can show that these students might be experiencing some type of anxiety related to the content that they are learning. It is important to try and combat against the amygdala hijack because it is what is preventing students to process the information being presented to them. This can cause students to be more worried about the topic than actually trying to earn about it. This is also the result if a high affective filter. This affective filter prevents the brain from processing new knowledge and is a response to the stress and anxiety that the student might be undergoing.
I feel as though that this information is important for ELD teachers to understand because they have students that might be experiencing culture shock and are already stressed that they are at a disadvantage since they do not fully know english. In order for these problems to be combated against, it would be helpful of the teacher to try and lower the affective filter of these students so that they feel more comfortable and open to learning. This will allow them to process the information that they are learning in an efficient way which would be free of stress and anxiety. This would also allow for more growth within the classroom because the students would be able to learn and process information faster.
