Providing wise feedback to students can be coupled with comprehensible input + 1 because they are both strategies that can be used to bring out the best in students. Comprehensible input + 1 level above focuses on “going for meaning” which means that in order to move on to the next level, the students have to believe in themselves and set a goal for achieving this success. The end result of this strategy allows the student to receive structure because they will begin to hone their skills and move on to the next level.
Wise feedback to the students can allow for them to have a better sense of what they did wrong and can give them an idea of what they should do to improve upon their efforts. This form of critical feedback is given to the students in a way that will inform them that they are capable of reaching the next level and shouldn’t give up. This is a way of showing students that you have high expectations for them but to also remind them that success can’t be handed to them.
Being a warm demander can help to facilitate wise feedback by showing that you believe that the students can succeed through the use of the critical feedback. This can be seen as a way of telling students to succeed through the steps in the feedback without fully being an authoritarian. This is telling students that they can succeed in a caring way. A good example of how I feel as though I could give wise feedback to a student would be by saying “I notice that you didn’t do as well as you wanted to on the quiz yesterday. I believe that you will do better next time with a little bit more studying. Keep trying and you will see that your results will continue to get better”. I think that this is a great way of showing a student that even though they are not performing as well as you want them to, you still believe that they are not someone to give up on.
